Teulada Moraira
'The Jewel in the Costa Blanca Crown'Spanish Fiesta
As well their afternoon siestas, when the towns and villages slow down and the locals sleep through the midday sun while tourists and holidaymakers frolic and play on the beaches, the Spanish are also famous for their colourful, musical and gastronomic Spanish Fiesta.
A Spanish fiesta, or Spanish festival, is a special occasion which provides the community with the opportunity to forget about their busy working lives, and for families, friends and guests to come together to cook some great Spanish food, enjoy locally-produced Spanish wines and to make brightly-coloured, exotic costumes for the Spanish parade through the streets, whilst listening to some traditional Spanish fiesta music.
A typical Spanish fiesta is based on religious or historical events, such as the death of a much-loved Saint, and is celebrated up and down the country. As well as the national fiestas, each region, and even town and village, hold their own fiestas to celebrate local events.
For several days before the Spanish fiesta, while the women of the villages spend their time preparing mouth-watering meals, using the very best locally grown produce from their farms peppering the fields and hills, and fresh fish from the mediterranean sea; while the men build floats for the Spanish parade, erect stages for the theatrical presentations and tables for the feast to come; while the children gather wood and old furniture to create huge bonfires for the locals to gather round; a sense of excitement builds.
A Spanish fiesta wouldn’t be complete without a huge firework display. The children gaze up at the night sky in awe as rocket after rocket shoots up, exploding and creating colourful, bright patterns that fall to the ground only to be replaced by another, as firecrackers explode and children squeal. The men, gathered in small groups laugh loudly and clap each other on the back, while the women look on suspiciously, wondering what the men are up to!
As the evening draws to an end and the bonfires die down leaving only the warm, burning embers that will be swept up and the streets cleaned, locals and tourists amble slowly back to their houses, farms and hotels; children, parents and grandparents, young and old all together, replete from the feast, tired from the dancing, muscles aching from the laughter, all looking forward just a couple of weeks or months, until the next Spanish fiesta, when the food will again be cooked, the wine will again be poured, the fires will again be built, and laughter will again ring out across the towns and villages.
