Teulada Moraira

'The Jewel in the Costa Blanca Crown'

Calpe Costa Blanca

Calpe is a town on the Costa Blanca. It is popular amongst many northern Europeans, particularly the British and Germans.

Calpe is only a very short drive, just five kilometres along the coast from Teulada Moraira, and is definitely worth a visit.

Calpe has  a large sweeping bay, backed by a deep promenade lined with shop, bars and restaurants. Unlike other Costa Blanca towns, Calpe has a large number of hotels.

Calpe is most famous for the stunning El Penon d’Ifach (Rock of Ifach): an emblem of the Costa Blanca. Standing at 332 metres and stretching out into the Mediterannean for an impressive 1 kilometre, Penon d’Ifach commands views across the Costa Blanca and looms large over the town of Calpe.

Geologically linked with another monolith at the other end of the Iberian Peninsular: The Rock of Gibraltar, Penon d’Ifach is a calcareous rock and is a result of a massive landslide from the Sierra mountains nearby. As well as being a significant landmark, is also home to a wide range of fauna and flora. In 1987 , the rock was purchased by the Valencian Government and was declared a Nature Reserve.

Over the years, Penon d’Ifach has been a muse to many a poet and artist and acts as a backdrop to, probably, more photographs on the Costa Blanca than any other attraction.

Walkers, photographers, painters, rock climbers, sailors and scuba divers all enjoy the facilities provided by this stunning rock.

Calpe is also very well know for the salt flats of Calpe: Las Salinas de Calpe, which, for centuries have provided a valuable income for Calpe’s economy, as the requirement for a regular supply of fresh salt for the preservation of food continues to grow. Calpe’s primary industry has been, and continues to be fishing, despite the growth of the tourist industry.

The salt flats are home to a wide-range of plants that have adapted to the salt and to a large number of migratory birds such as, flamingos and storks, laughing gulls and herons.
